Innovative applications of social media (blog post assignment)

It only seems appropriate to find research about this topic based on Tumblr. This is a blog site I have been using for about over a year and it’s growth has interested me. The article “Innovative Social Media Use at Colleges: Keeping it Casual with Tumblr” by Hiroki Murakami highlights important innovations the site is making in social media. This article highlights the blog site’s growth, demographic audeince, and new found use in colleges.

Tumblr, often called a microblogging website, has made a huge impact in social media over the past year. Murakami calls it’s social media presence “..is to traditional blogging as Twitter is to Facebook.” It is faster and simpler than any other blogging site and most of the post seen on Tumlbr are single photos or short text. This generation doesn’t have time to read long in-depth blog posts anymore, they want to brief snippet of news, gossip, and imagery. This innovation of blogging has skyrocketed Tumblr’s popularity.

The demographic of Tumblr users is a range from under 25 year-olds to politicans and celebrities. This has become the new site to post promotions in the entertainment industry. The articles tells that although millions of othr are taking hold of Tumblr, higher education is still on the cusp.

I find this fact interesting and see that it is going to change in the next few years. As on right now I have three tumblr blogs, a personal account, one for my computer graphics class, and now another one that I started for my SED 151 methods of secondary education class. Colleges are starting to catch onto the innovative learning found in blogging. The can use this tool to keep students up to date and posting their opinions. One school in Florida even has a college tumblr blog where they post the latest news about the school. They even open the blog up for questions, which students have taken full advantage of. This is an extremely important use of social media in higher education.

These findings have left me confident in the future of innovative social media. My generation will discover current events through social media and complete assignments on blogging sites. All theses innovations will benefit our social media society.

Wearable Planters

Why should your plants stay at home? They help clean the air you breathe, are beautiful, and create a wonderful conversation starter. Carry a sprout, a succulent, or a flower you found on your morning walk. - Colleen Jordan
